Land Use Equity

GoFB builds, sustains and supports grassroots coalitions advocating for equitable development and environ-mentally just land use in our watershed.

The Flushing waterfront is under increased speculation for redevelopment. GoFB builds community power to ensure that waterfront projects prioritize the health and resilience of local ecologies and communities.

FED UP Coalition

Beginning with opposition to the Special Flushing Waterfront District in 2019, the Flushing for Equitable Development and Urban Planning coalition (FED UP) has built community power around campaigns that oppose abusive land use practices and advance equitable development.

With a deep concern for the displacement of our human communities and natural environments, we collaborate on comnunity plans that envision ecological justice for all. Since beginning advocacy focused on Citi Field, FED UP has grown to include Queens groups outside of Flushing who will be collectively impacted by increased luxury developments.

Sensible Ways to LGA Coalition

GoFB played a key role in forming and sustaining the Sensible Way to LGA coalition, which includes transit equity groups and resident organizations impacted by Port Authority’s proposed LaGuardia AirTrain project.

After 5 years of organizing, the coalition successfully advocated for a pause on the LGA AirTrain proposal and a new review of transit alternatives. The review ultimately found the LGA AirTrain to be an inadequate solution.

Community Vision Planning

At Guardians of Flushing Bay, we strive to place community voices and ecological concerns at the forefront of our work. That means thoughtfully and collaboratively engaging with Flushing Waterways communities in envisioning a healthier and equitably accessible waterfront. We do this through an iterative visioning process, which began with our 2016 Flushing Waterways Vision Plan.
