Dara Illowsky is the New York Staff Attorney at Save the Sound. She works across the New York side of the Long Island Sound region to ensure that the regions waters are fishable, swimmable, and boatable, communities are resilient against the impacts of climate change and have clean air to breathe, open spaces, wildlife, and critical natural areas are protected, and the laws that protect natural resources, public health, and environmental justice are strong and the region’s residents are empowered to use them. Dara received her J.D. and Certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon in 2022, graduating first in her class. She clerked for the Alaska Supreme Court in Anchorage, Alaska before returning to her home-state of New York. Prior to law school, Dara received a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Science from Brown University, and worked a series of jobs in environmental education and law, including as an environmental educator in Queens. Dara has had the privilege of getting to know Guardians of Flushing Bay through her work with Save the Sound, and she is inspired by the organization’s commitment to the health and wellbeing not just of local waterways, but of the surrounding communities and safe and equitable access to those waterways.
